Start-up's pitch: The Envelope, please
If a California start-up delivers on the promise of its first product, E-mail recipients may no longer need Carnac the Magnificent to decipher multimedia messages and attachments. PostX Corp. is rolling out PostX Envelope, a Java-based E-mail add-on the company claims will allow users to send text, documents, video and audio in a customizable package that will stay intact and be easy to open. The software, which features a security option based on calling ahead to the recipient with a password, will be demonstrated this week at Internet Showcase '97 in San Diego. While the client-only software will not be for sale until September, analysts and test customers were quick to give PostX Envelope an initial stamp of approval. Plans for future Java-based enhancements, coupled with a widely predicted mushrooming of Java Virtual Machines (JVM) on corporate desktops, could make PostX Envelope a hit, they said.
Woman pleads guilty to stabbing dog, criminal mischief
A woman accused of stabbing her ex-husband's dog 27 times — the 20-pound mixed breed named Marti was later euthanized because of her injuries — pleaded guilty to a cruelty to animals charge Tuesday. Her agreement with prosecutors calls for a 6-month jail term and 10 years deferred adjudication, a form of probation. Joanne Lee Hinojosa, 33, of Kyle, is scheduled to be sentenced March 7, at which time state District Judge Mike Lynch will decide whether to follow the terms of the plea agreement. The agreement also calls for Hinojosa to continue mental health counseling, take prescribed medication, undergo anger management treatment and perform 250 hours of community service. The community service may not be served at an animal facility, such as a shelter, and Hinojosa may not be the sole caretaker of any animals during her 10-year probation, according to the agreement.
Mora will be Seahawks' next head coach
Holmgren will coach the Seahawks in 2008, the final year of his contract. He announced last month that next season -- his 10th with the franchise -- will be his last with the Seahawks. Mora, 46, is the Seahawks' assistant head coach and coaches the defensive backs. He attended junior high and high school in Bellevue and played football at the University of Washington. He started his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Washington, but has worked in the NFL since 1985. He was named head coach in Atlanta in 2004. The Falcons won 11 games their first season under Mora and reached the NFC Championship Game. Tim Ruskell, who was hired as the Seahawks' president in 2005, worked with Mora in 2004 with Atlanta. The Falcons' victories declined in the two following years, and he was fired after the team went 7-9 in 2006 and missed the playoffs..
